Author Guidelines

Editorial guidelines

To submit an article, first of all it is necessary to ask the editors (maes@unibo.it) to register you on the platform as an author; only then will it be possible to log in and start the submission procedure.

To submit an article to the journal, authors are required to meet the following conditions:

  • The proposal must not have been previously published or currently submitted to other journals for publication. If this is not the case, the reasons should be clarified in the Comments for Editor section.
  • The text complies with the stylistic and bibliographical requirements detailed in the editorial rules.
  • The only formats allowed for proposal uploads are .doc and .docx.
  • It is requested that two separate files be uploaded in the upload section of the platform:
    • the anonymised contribution
    • personal details (full name, affiliation, e-mail), a short biography of the author of maximum 100 words and any dedications or acknowledgements.

Language

Articles are accepted in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

Abstract

The article must be preceded by an abstract in the language of the contribution and in English, of a maximum length of 150 words.

Keywords

The author must provide up to 5 keywords in the same language of the contribution and in English, which summarise the principal themes of the article.

Stylistic standards

The proposal must be maximum of 20,000 words long (including footnotes). Submissions must follow these stylistic standards:

  • Body of text in Book Antiqua 10 font;
  • Notes in Book Antiqua 8 font;
  • Single line spacing;
  • Line spacing per paragraph at 0.5 cm;
  • Upper margin 2.54 cm; lower margin 2.54 cm; left margin 5.08 cm; right margin 5.08 cm;
  • The use of styles is recommended:
    • Title (for the title of your article)
    • Title 2 (for the section titles of the article and the final bibliography);
  • It is recommended not to use 'carriage returns' (enter key) to space between sections. Use 'page breaks' (not section breaks) instead;
  • It is recommended to select 'keep with next' in the 'paragraph' menu to avoid section titles being unrelated to the first paragraph of the section;
  • Images, maximum 20 and in .jpeg format, at the end of the text with captions and copyright information if necessary.

General criteria

Use as few capital letters as possible: all civil and ecclesiastical offices (e.g. podestà, pontiff, bishop) should be lowercase; i.e. "the Church" should be capitalized only if it indicates the overall entity.

Foreign or Latin phrases should appear in italics, whereas longer quotations of original passages should be indicated in round type in double inverted commas. In case of incomplete quotations, it is necessary to indicate the incompletion by using three dots, which should be enclosed in square brackets for passages omitted within the quotation (e.g.: "Nel mezzo del cammin [...] selva oscura...").

Capital letters should be used:

  • in the diplomatic reproduction of the title pages of ancient editions [the original division of the lines will be indicated by oblique bars: /, double  bars // in the case of a paragraph or end of page. Bars and double bars are also to be used when quoting poetry, to indicate the end of verses (/) and stanzas (//)].
  • in the serial numerals of kings, popes and emperors and centuries (e.g.: Urban VI).
  • in the abbreviations and call marks of manuscripts and documents preserved in archives and research libraries (e.g.: Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio, ms. B.3221.)

Quotation style

The journal follows the Chicago-Style quotation format (ed. 2017). Please refer to the website of the developers of the citation system for any doubts. The proposal should follow this citation scheme in its note-only version. Footnotes should be placed after punctuation marks.

The Editorial board recommends the use of referencing software to organizethe footnotes and final bibliography. Some examples of suitable software are: Zotero, Mendely, EndNote, etc.

Bibliography

A final bibliography divided between primary and secondary sources sorted by surname and alphabetical order is requested. The journal follows the Chicago citation format (ed. 2017). For any doubts please refer to the website of the developers of the citation system. Below are the most important rules:

  • Authors' and editors' surnames are capitalised with the initial only. This also applies to foreign editors. Names are to be entered in full;
  • all book titles are to be italicised followed by full stops;
  • titles of articles and book sections are to be placed in high double inverted commas, followed by full stops;
  • publisher and place of publication should be separated by ":" and followed, after a comma, by the date of publication;
  • For contributions in miscellaneous volumes, the pages should be inserted in-between the title of the miscellaneous work, accompanied by the names of the editors, and the place of edition;
  • never write Id. or Ead., but repeat the surname of the author. Alternatively, '---' may be inserted in place of the repeated author name;
  • never use AA.VV, but indicatee the names of the authors (maximum of three) or the simple title of the work. The editor is indicated after the title of the work edited (e.g.: Héritages arabo-islamiques dans l'Europe méditerranéenne, ed. by Catherine Richarté)
  • a table or list of abbreviations must be provided (except for the most well-known abbreviations, such as MGH, PL). Do not use dots to separate the letters of the abbreviation.
  • Journals are cited in inverted commas ("I quaderni del m.ae.s. - Journal of m.ae.s”.), followed by a full stop and the name of the journal in italics followed by a comma, issue number, date in round brackets followed by a colon (:) and page numbers.

Footnotes

  • indication of page(s) with the number only;
  • the reference to the entire work cited should be indicated without indications of pages;
  • if the citation comes from the work cited immediately before, indicate only the surname of the author; and possibly the page numbers referred to preceded by a comma in case they are different;
  • if a work is cited a second time indicate the surname of the author followed by a comma and the abbreviated title of the work.
  • All footnotes should end in a full stop.

Abbreviations for the indication of preservation sites, repertoires of sources or series must be specified in the first note relating to them and must be made explicit in a List of Abbreviations to be placed at the end of the text.
