Abstract

This article investigates the accounts of Nithard and Angelbert concerning the Battle of Fontenoy (25 June 841) through a methodological framework structured around three interrelated levels of experience. The first level focuses on the individual processes through which these two author-witnesses conferred meaning upon, interpreted, and rearticulated the event. In a second stage, the analysis moves beyond the experiential subject to the broader social and relational dynamics that influence the production, mediation, and circulation of experience. Particular attention is given to the narrative conventions, sociocultural models, and political expectations that informed the content, expressive modes, and narrative strategies adopted by Nithard and Angelbert. Finally, by integrating contemporary and later sources, the article seeks to understand how the memory of the battle became embedded within collective narratives, ultimately transforming the experience of Fontenoy into a structure that exceeds the specificity of the historical event.
