In the long evolution process of the University of Bologna one of the most important phenomena that was at the same time cause and symptom was the progressive definition of reference laws and rules. From premises and origins induced by sporadic personal initiatives not subject to pre-established rules, it was possible to widen and formalize access, frequency and recognition of studies with a parable in which internal rules, then laws and finally statutes - both municipal and of the universities' communities - played a decisive role, leading to an increasingly complex system of legislative acts and regulations which, since the 12th century, shaped the university communities. Local and central authorities often conflicted with each other with measures taken almost always to the detriment of the original autonomy of the students, who nevertheless gained increasing guarantees for the recognition of their curricula studiorum.Downloads
