Abstract

This paper is part of the recent historical context which has led in the last decades, thanks to new documentary and material sources, to a reconsideration of the contacts between the West and the Arabian world. My study focuses on the case of trade between Calabria and Maghreb through the archaeological discoveries brought to light by recent studies about the carriage material used for the transport of wine, olive oil and other products. In addition to these, there are numismatic sources found in this region, too. Furthermore, I aim to demonstrate that even if there are no documentary sources for the study of Calabria in the medieval period, relying on other sources we can build a new profile of this region in the Middle Ages, but above all we can demonstrate that this region belonged to the Mediterranean trade context in the same way as other regions did.
