Abstract

It is proposed a rather exhaustive chronotaxis of the castellans who succeeded one another in the two castles of the city of Brindisi, the castello Grande or castello di Terra (also called Svevo-Aragonese, 1230, which replaced a previous Norman castle) and the castello dell’Isola (said also Alfonsino, founded in 1481). The review, with a purely prosopographic character, greatly enriches the knowledge of the names of the castellans present in Brindisi from the Norman period to modern times, making use of a punctual counting of archival sources and new informations also coming from little-known printed works. In particular, for the medieval period many new castellans of the Grande castle have been identified and - with respect to what was previously published - important corrections have also been made to their names and the dates relating to them.
